THE Australian Yachting Federation is looking ahead to the 2000 Olympiad, planning to stage an international regatta for Olympic and World Youth sailing classes, every year leading up the Sydney Games.

Strong support has been received from major yacht clubs, according to the federation, which is preparing a notice of race for distribution throughout the yachting world.

The regatta, to be sailed on Sydney Harbour, will be open to all Olympic classes - Soling and Star keelboats, Tornado catamarans, 470 (men and women), Finn, Laser and Europe dinghies and Mistral sailboards, with the additional World Youth classes, Laser Radial and 420 dinghies.

For information on the regatta, telephone the Yachting Association of NSW, (02) 660 1266.

TOMORROW sees one of Sydney's more unusual yachting events when an estimated 50 or so craft cast off from Pittwater's Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club for the Blackmore's Three Island charity fun race.

The field comprises some well-known skippers, among them Sir James Hardy, Kay Cottee and Don McIntyre, but the sponsor, high-profile businessman and Waterways Board director, Marcus Blackmore, will be missing, as he will be competing in a race out of Auckland.

In case you're wondering, the three islands of the race are Scotland, Lion and Dangar.

Organisers have planned a "Le Mans-style" start for the race, with skippers, after having been feted at a champagne breakfast, being called upon to down a tot of Bundaberg rum then race across the club lawns to their yacht

Should be a sight to see, but it's all in a good cause, with every crew member paying $20 to be involved, the proceeds going to the Leo and Jenny Leukaemia and Cancer Foundation.

It's not too late to join in, simply call the club on (02) 997 1022.

NANNI Diesel has released two new models to enhance its successful line-up of marine diesels.

The new engines are a three-cylinder developing 27 hp, and a four-cylinder of 35 hp.

Nanni Diesel's Peter Collins says the Nanni range is now eight models under 60 hp, the largest marine diesel range in this power band available.

Both new engines will be unveiled at the Sydney Boat Show (July 28 - August 3).

Call Nanni Diesel, Alexandria, on (02) 319 5222.
