Striker Stuart Young served his apprenticeship with English Premier League giant Arsenal.

Now 26 and a soccer tradesman, he arrived in Wollongong yesterday to join the Wolves.

Young had a colourful background with four English clubs before a three-year stint in Singapore.

He played his last game for Woodlands in Singapore on Saturday.

``We beat Marine Castle 3-0 and I scored two of the goals so that was a nice way to finish up over there," Young said.

``I had a season with Home United before two seasons with Woodlands.

``We didn't make the play-offs but I enjoyed my time in Singapore.

``I scored my share of goals."

Young was the leading goalscorer in the S-League last season, finding the net 32 times for Woodlands.

``I had often thought about playing in Australia but the opportunity had never presented itself," he said.

``I was talking with David Cervinski after we had played his team in Singapore and he told me he had signed with the Wolves."

``We were having a drink and he said the Wolves might be interested in me," Young said.

The Wolves were interested, and after Young spent a week training at Brandon Park, he signed a contract.

His paperwork is now being processed by the Immigration Department and he is a chance of playing against Sydney Olympic at Belmore Sportsground on Sunday.

Young said he had been impressed by the setup at Brandon Park.

He said he was looking forward to playing in the National Soccer League.

Married to Claire, Young will become a father in June.

He played his junior soccer in Hull and was captain of its under 11 side.

That season he scored 56 goals in 24 games and gradually attracted the attention of a number of League clubs.

Arsenal took Young on as an apprentice professional but he was released after youth and reserve grade appearances.

He signed with second division Hull and was there for 18 months.

He then spent two seasons with Scarborough and a season with Scunthorpe, both in the third division.

One of the highlights of his career with Hull was playing a League Cup tie against Queens Park Rangers, who were then in the Premier League.

``We lost 3-1 but I scored our goal and it really stands out in my memory," Young said.

``It was from 35m and flew into the top corner.

``My debut with Hull was another game I remember vividly.

``We won 1-0 and I scored the goal."
